Hi, I’m Alan and welcome to alandmuray.com.  I am a multimedia specialist based on the remote Isle of Lewis, an island off the north west coast of Scotland.

I work from my home in the village of Shawbost on the West coast of the island. I enjoy the balance of technology and nature and find that the two need not be mutually exclusive.

My work is obviously technology-based but right outside my front door I have access to everything from the rugged island coastline with its beautiful white sand beaches to the vast, largely unspoiled moorland and hills of the inner island.

Balance is the key, so when I’m not in front of my computer designing something or making music, you’ll probably find me enjoying a walk or run in the surrounding area. I find the area that I live in and nature in general, to be inspiring and influential to my work.

My hobbies are music, books, film, Japan, exercise and my dog Ted.

alandmuray.com is my one-person multimedia studio. From it I work on a variety of multimedia projects in the areas of web design, graphic design, design for print, music composition, performance and production and digital photography.

What kind of clients do you work with?

I tend to mostly work with clients who require a graphic designer with web skills. Most of my clients value the importance of the visual aspect of their project and I enjoy helping them look good. As a one-person operation, my clients tend to appreciate the close working relationship I offer – a direct interaction with me and without a management tier.

Here are a few examples of typical clients:

  • A new company looking to build their website, integrate it with a content management system and have their visuals designed.
  • An already established company with an existing web site looking to improve the look and feel of their site.
  • An artist or band requesting CD/DVD artwork and packaging design. This goes hand-in-hand with their website redesign and the design of any other promotional materials.
  • A company looking for the design or redesign of their logo/identity. This service is often interwoven with design of printed materials such as stationery and business cards and sometimes also the redesign of their website.
  • A company who are looking for a piece of original music for their TV, radio or web advertisement.
  • A client who has a product or premises and requires good quality non-professional photography to complement their website

Reasons to hire me:

  • - Most of my clients require cross-discipline skills e.g. a fully functional website with a professionally graphic-designed front end. I can provide a range of skills therefore avoiding the need to hire a team or agency.
  • - For the reasons above, I have relatively low overheads compared to an agency which means I can keep my prices as reasonable as possible.
  • - I have access to skilled like-minded individuals should any part of your project require to be sub-contracted out.
  • - I provide a close one-to-one working relationship with clients

Reasons you might want to look elsewhere:

  • - Due to the range of skills I have and the ongoing active interest I have in pursuing all of them, plus the fact that I am only one person, I may not be able to commit to a 18+ month project. Always ask me about it anyway.
  • - If you are looking for a webmaster i.e. somebody who's role it is to manage and maintain your content in real time (my websites and follow-up training leave you with a website you can maintain on your own)
  • - If you feel the visual aspect of your project is unimportant. I aim to make all my work look great and that comes as part of the price of your project.
